They appear on cans and bottles but it’s the caramel and the chemical coloring that give it its distinctive dark color. The manufactures say that they have instructed their caramel suppliers to reduce the amount of a constituent chemical known as 4-MEI. California has a 29-microgram benchmark (4-MEI) for that chemical. A recent assemble of Coke and Pepsi can in the Washington area had levels ranging from 103 & 153 micrograms.
