Hi. My name is Charlie Comero.
Oh, just… I used to be Ms. Comero, now I am Mr. Comero. I am Transgender Man and I live here in Charlotte, North Carolina.
I love you, Charlie.
I love you too. I moved here four years ago for Teach for America, I taught [here] at high school. And I was nervous about coming to what’s call the Bible Belt of north, getting down here to. I was nervous. Ya’ll, I feel in love with this town. I love this city and I don’t think I’m ever going to move away. I’ve met the nicest, kindest, wonderful people, and you all taught me if you happen to be Christian, you all taught me what it means to be a Christian, up north it looks a little bit different. So I want to thank you for that, that was a teaching moment for me.
Nothing I can say is more important than what was just said by Lara and AJ.
I want to make that clear and to be clearly honest without reason it gives a comfortable for me to speaking after them because of how important their words are. This, what I’ve now started to call, and other people have too I heard tonight. This Hate Bill 2 [HB2] has nothing to do with transgender people and everything to do with transgender people at the same time, it’s both.
This bill is about oppressing the already oppressed.
This bill is about political gain on the shoulders of the already marginalized members of our community.
This bill is about maintaining the status quo of the Republican Party. This bill is about rallying the social conservatives, so they turn how to vote.
Remember 2004, you all remember that.
And the gay marriage debate, and how that served as smoke and mirrors and we all know who won that election.
The exit poll show the main reason for social conservatives to come out and vote gay marriage, what’s going to be this year.
The lies and misinformation and fear mongering and the false reality of the religious freedom, all serve the rally of the social conservative base.
Now, twelve years later in seven states, seven states – lawmakers have or are wanting to do the same thing that happened here in North Carolina, Illinois, Kansas and Massachusetts, Missouri and Mississippi, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
I know this is my opinion and I am trying to keep it real and say the unpopular things, because those are the things that need to be heard, and thank you for listening.
This movement with these proposed laws, propagates are current system where white men are on top. They are doing it on the shoulders of the people who have been oppressed the longest. They are doing this on the shoulders of people of color, of those in the LGBTQ community. On the shoulders of women and anyone else who can now be a target for hate without local repercussion. This bill has nothing to do with transgender people and everything to do with transgender people at the same time.
If they are smart, they will amend the law to focus on discriminating solely against transgender people.
My hope is that you all who will come to that town hall meeting, as well once those amendments are made. This is about all of us doing better and all of us taking the tough questions – excuse me – this is all of us doing better and all of us asking the tough questions and saying the hard things.
It’s time for us to be clear. It’s time for us to clear the air of the lies and the smoke and the hate. It’s time to call what is going on here.
Let’s let them know that we see it and we are not going to let their agenda win.
It’s time for us not just us social liberals here sitting in this beautiful room, but all of us who believed in love, first, love first ya’ll. It’s time for us to create change in our own life by turning to those and we all have those people in our life who don’t get it and are afraid. They are afraid because of their own experiences.

Those who are part of the fear mongering conversation, unfortunately not all of us can do the safeway.
One in twelve transgender women are murdered.
One in eight transgender women of color are murdered. I’m going to say it again.
One in eight transgender women of color are murdered.
How many trans women of colored do you see in the room.
Why aren’t they here? It’s dangerous.
41% of transgender people attempt suicide.
These are all forms of violence. This bill encourages the already violent climate in a transgender community and encourages our systemic racism and sexism and ageism.
This bill is hate. This law is fear and that’s exactly why we are going to win.
Its with time and it’s with love and it’s with courage and we will win.
All of you have courage for being here today. Take that courage out to your everyday life and have those difficult conversations.

The only way we can do this together and with love and boundaries to say enough, stop hurting us, because this is about all of us and the only way we can do this is together, vote, show up, let your voice be heard, speak from love, that’s the only way they’re going to listen. Thank you.
