Tony Robbins Motivates You In 20 Minutes TEDTalks

Audience Claps.
Thank you, I have to tell you that Im both challenged and excited. My excitement is that I get a chance to give something back. My challenge is the shortest seminar is 50 hours.

Laughing audience.

I’m not exaggerating, I do weekends and what i do, I do more than that obviously, I coach people, but I’m into immersion – how did you learn language? You didn’t learn it by learning principles, you got in it and did it so often and it became real and the bottom line of why I’m here, with this crazy mopho is that I’m really in a position, I’m not really here to motivate you obviously. You don’t need that. Alot of times, thats what people think I do. And its the furthest thing from it. Um what happens though is, people say to me: “I don’t need any motivation. And I say: “Well that’s interesting, that’s not what I do”. I’m the WHY GUY. I wanna know why you do what you do?

What is your motive for action?

What is it that drives you in your life today, not ten years ago, or are you running the same pattern? Cause I believe the invisible force of internal drive activated is the most important thing in the world. Im only here cause i believe that emotion is the force of life. All of us here have great minds. (Grunt) Most of us here have great minds. ( Laugh ) Right I dont know about the category, but we all know how to think and are minds we can rationalize anything and we can make anything happen. We can, I agree with what was described a few days ago, that this idea that people work for their self interests, but we all know that thats bullshit at times. You dont work on your self interests at all times. Because when emotion comes into it the wiring chances the way it functions. So its wonderful for us to think intellectually that the life of the world is, especially those who are very smart. We can play this game in our head and I really want to know what’s driving you. And I’d like to maybe invite you to do at this end of this talk is to explore where you are today. For two reasons; One, so that you can contribute more. And two, so that hopefully we can not just understand other people more but appreciate them more and create the kinds of connections that can stop some of the challenges we face in our society today, that are only gonna get magnified by the technology that is connecting us.

( text on the screen reads: Effective leaders have the ability to consistently move themselves and others to action because they understand the “invisible forces” that shape us. )

Cause it’s making us intersect and that intersection doesn’t always create the view that everybody now understands everybody and everybody appreciates everybody.

So I have had an obsession basically for thirty years, and that obsession has been: What makes the difference in the quality of peoples lives?

What makes the difference in the quality of people lives

What makes the difference in their performance, cause thats what I’ve been hired to do.

I gotta produce the result now. ( finger snap )

Thats what I’ve done for thirty years. I get a call when the athlete is burning down on national television, they were ahead by five strokes and now they cant get back on the course. And I gotta do something right now, to get the result or nothing matters. I get the phone call when the child is gonna commit suicide, and I gotta do something right now. And in twenty-nine years, I’ve been very grateful, I’ve never lost one in twenty-nine years, that doesn’t mean I won’t some day, but I haven’t done it. The reason is the understanding of these human needs, I want to talk to you about. Um so, when I get those calls about performance that’s one thing. How do you make a change? But also I’m looking to see; What is it that’s shaping that person’s ability to contribute – to do something beyond themselves? So maybe the real question is – you know. I look at life and say there is two master lessons is; One is, there is the science of achievement which everyone in this room has almost mastered to an amazing first step that which is invisible and make it visible. How do you take what you dream about and make it happen. ( snaps finger )

Whether it be your business or your contribution to society of money, whatever it is for you, your body, your family. But the lesson of life that is rarely mastered is the art of fulfillment.

Cause science is easy, we know the rules, you write the code and you follow the, and you get the results. Once you know the game you just, you know, you up the ante don’t you? But when it comes to fulfillment, that’s an art and the reason is, its about appreciation and contribution. You can only feel so much by yourself. So I’ve had an interesting laboratory trying to answer the real question of the real question, what’s the difference in somebody’s life when you look at somebody like those people that you’ve given everything to. Like all the resources that they say they need, not a hundred dollar computer, you gave them the best computer, you gave them love, you gave them joy, you were there to comfort them, and those people very often, and you know some of them, for sure, and the rest of their life, love, education, background, spent all their money going in and out of rehab. And then you met people through ultimate pain, psychologically, sexually, spiritually, emotionally abused and not always but often they become the people that contribute most to society. So the question we got to ask ourselves is really is: What is it? What is it that shapes us? We live in a therapy culture, most of us don’t do that, but the culture therapy culture. What I mean by that is, the mind set that we our past. And everybody in this room, you wouldn’t be in this room – you wouldn’t of bought that theory. But most of society thinks that biography is destiny. The past equals the future.

And of course it does if you live there. What people in this room know is that we have to remind ourselves though cause you can know something intellectually and you can know what to do and not use it. But not apply it. So really we gotta remind ourselves is that decision is the altimate power – that’s what it really is!

When you ask people: Have you failed to achieve something? How many have ever failed to achieve something significant in your life? Say I!

Audience says: “I” ( without enthusiasm )

Thanks for your reaction on a high level there.

Audience laughs.

But if you, if you ask people: Why didn’t you achieve something? Somebody who is working for you, or a partner or even yourself, and you failed to achieve a goal; What is the reason people say: ” They failed to achieve?” What do they tell you.

Don’t have the
Didn’t know enough?
Didn’t have the knowledge?
Didn’t have the money?
Didn’t have the time? ( audience says time )

Didn’t have the technology?

You know, I Didn’t have the right manager?

Audience member say: Didn’t have the Supreme Court?

Didn’t have the Supreme Court?

( Audience cheers, laughs, claps and whistles )

( hi- five’s the audience member )

And

And

What do all those including the Supreme Court have in common?

They are a claim to you missing resources!

And they may be accurate, you may not have the money, you may not have the Supreme Court but that is not the defining factor.

( Audience laughs )

Um and you can correct me if I’m wrong. The defining factor is never resources it’s resourcefulness. And what I mean specifically, rather than some phrase is
if you have emotion, human emotion, something that I experience from you, the day before yesterday in a level that is profound that I’ve ever experienced in communicating that emotion, and i believed I would of beat his ass and won.

( Audience claps and cheers and applauds )

But, how easy for him, for me to tell him what he should do.

( Audience claps )

Idiot Robbins, but I know, when we watch the debate, when we watch the debate again that time there are emotions that block people ability that get this man’s intellect, capacity and the way they crossed to some people that day. Cause I know people that wanted to vote in your direction, that didn’t. And I was upset. And you know that there was emotion there. How many people know what I’m talking about? Say: ” I ” .

( The Audience Says: ” I “)

So emotion is in, and if we get the right emotion, we can get ourselves to do anything. And get through it, if you are creative enough, playful enough, fun enough, we can get through to anybody. Yes or No?

( Audience says: ” Yes “. )

If you don’t have the money and you’re creative and determined enough you find the way. So this is the ultimate resource, this is not the story that people tell us. Right, the story that people tell us, is a bunch of different stories, they tell us they don’t have the resources. But ultimately if you take a look here, ( flip it up if you would )

They say: What do all these reasons have in common? They say that. ( next one please, he’s broken my pattern, that son of a bitch )

Audience laughs

But I appreciated the energy, I tell you that.

What determines your resources, we said that decisions shape destiny, which is my focus here. If decisions shape destiny so determines it is you got to focus on, right now, you have to decide what you’re going to focus on, this second, and consciously or unconsciously. The minute you decide to focus on something, you give it a meaning and whatever that meaning is, you produce emotion, is this the end or the beginning? Is god punishing me or rewarding me? Or is this the roll of the dice? An emotion creates what we are gonna do or the action. So think about your own life the decisions that have shaped your destiny. I know that sounds really heavy but in the last five or ten years, fifteen years how many decisions that you’ve made, have you made a different decision your life would of been competely different? How many can think of one, honestly? Better of worse? Say: “I”.

Audience says: ” I “.

So the bottom line, maybe it was where to go to work and you met the love of your life there and maybe it was a career decision, i know the google genius’ I saw here. I understand it was their decision was to sell their technology at first, what if they made that decision at first. To build their own culture, how would the world be different, how would their lives be different, their impact. The history of our world is decisions, when the women stands up and says: “No, I won’t go to the back of the bus”. She didn’t just effect her life, that decision shaped our culture. Or someone standing in front of a tank. Or being in a position like La, Lance Armstrong, and someone says to you: “You have Testicular Cancer”. I would be tough for any male, especially if you ride a bike.

Audience laughs a little

Right

You got it in your brain, you got it in your lungs, but what was his decision what to focus on? Different than most people, what did it mean? It wasn’t the end it was the beginning. What we gonna do, he goes off and wins seven championships, he never won once before he has cancer cause he got emotional fitness, psychological strength, that’s the difference in human beings that I’ve seen of the three million that have been around. Cause that’s how many Ive seen – three million people from 80 different countries that I’ve interacted with in the last twenty-nine years. And after a while patterns become obvious, you see that South America, Africa, maybe connect in a certain way. Other people say: ” Oh, that sounds, ridiculous”. It’s simple. So what shape Lance, what shape’s you? Two invisible forces, very quickly. One, state. We have all had times. Have you had time you did something and after you did it, I cant believe I said that, I can’t believe I did that, it was so stupid. Who has been there? Say: “I “.

Have you every done something and after you do it, you go, um um, that was me. ( He smiles )

Audience laughs

Aight

It wasn’t your ability, it was your state.

Your motto of the world, is what shapes you long-term. You’re motto of the world is the filter. Thats what’s shaping us, that’s what makes people make decisions.

If want want to influence somebody, we gotta already know what influences them. And its made up in three parts I believe.

First: What’s your target? What are you after?
Which I believe it’s not your desire, you can get your desires, your goals, how many people have thought, is this all there is? How many people have been there? Say ” I ” . So its needs we have. There is 6 human needs. Second, once you know the target, that is driving you is, and you uncover it, the truth, you don’t form it, you uncover it, then you find out your map, what’s your belief system telling you, how to get those needs. Some people think the way to get those needs is destroy the world, some people to build something, create something, love someone, and then there is the fuel you pick, very quickly, six needs. ( slaps his hand )

First one, Certainly. Now these are not goals or desires, they are universal, everyone needs to avoid pain and at least be comfortable. And how do you get it, control everybody, develop a skill, give up, smoke a cigarette, if you got totally certain ironically, even though we all need that, if you are not certain about your health, your children, or money, you don’t about that much, your not sure that the ceiling is gonna hold up, your not
gonna listen to any speaker, but if we go get total certainty, we get what, what do we feel, if we get certain, what’s gonna happen, when is it gonna happen, whats gonna happen, what would you feel? Bored out of your mind, so God in her infinite wisdom, gave us a second need which is Uncertainty. We need variety, we need surprise, how many of you here love surprises? Say: ” I “.

Audience says: ” I “.

Bullshit, you like the surprises you want!

Audience laughs

The ones you don’t want, you call them problems but you need them, so variety is important. Have you ever rented a video of a film that you already seen? Who has done this? Get a f***in life?

Audience laughs

Right
Why are you doing it, cause you are certain that its good, cause you read it before, you saw it before, you are hoping its been long enough that forgot enough that there is variety.

Third human need critical significance, we only need to feel important, special, unique, you can get it by making more money, you can do it by being more spiritual, you can do it by getting your self in a situation where you can put tattoos and earings in places where humans don’t even want to know. What ever it takes, the fastest way to do this, if you have no background no culture and no belief in resources or resourcefulness is violence. If i put a gun to your head and I live in the hood, instantly, I am significant – zero to ten. And how high ten. How certain are you gonna respond to me – ten. How much uncertainty, who knows what’s going to happen next? Kind of exciting? Like climbing up into a cave and and doing that stuff all the way down there, total variety and uncertainty and significant isn’t it? So you want to risk your life for it? So that’s why violence will be around and will be around unless we have a consciousness change as a species. You can get significant in a million ways but to get significant you got to be unique and different, here is what we really need.

Connection and love – the fourth need. We all want it, most people settle for connection cause love is too scary. Don’t want to get hurt. Who here has been in an intimate relationship? Say: ” I ” .

Audience laughs

If you don’t raise your hand, you have had other shit too, come on. And you will get hurt again, aren’t you’re glad you’ve came to this positive visit. But here what’s true, we need it. We can do it through intimacy, we can do it through friendship, through prayer, through walking in nature, if nothing else works for you get a dog, don’t get a cat, get a dog, if you leave for two minutes you be going ( side to side body motion ) for six months – five minutes later, right. Now these four needs every human finds a way to met. Even if you lie to yourself if you have split personalities. But the last two needs. The first four needs are called the needs of the personalities that’s what I call it. The last two are the needs of the spirit. And this is where fulfillment comes, you won’t get fulfillment from the first four, you will figure a way, you smoke, drink, do whatever, met the first four, but the last two. Number five you must grow. We all know the answer here, if you don’t grow, you what? If a relationship is not growing, if a business is not growing, if you’re not growing, doesn’t matter how much money you have, how many friends you have, how many people love you, you feel like hell. And the reason we grow is – I believe is something we give a value. Cause the sixth need is to contribute beyond ourselves.

We all know as corny it sounds, Living is giving, life is not about me, it’s about we, this culture knows that, this room knows that. And its exciting, when you see Nicholas up here talking about his hundred dollar computer, the most passionate exciting thing is, here is a genius, but he’s got a calling now, you can feel the difference in him. And its beautiful. And that calling can touch other people, and in my own life, my own life has been touched, because when i was eleven years old – Thanksgiving – No Money – No food. And we’re not gonna starve but my father was totally messed up, and my mother was letting him know how bad he messed up. And somebody came to the door and delivered food. My father made three decisions, I know what they were briefly, his focus was this is charity, what does this mean, I’m worthless, what do I gotta do?, leave my father – which he did.

The time of the most painful experiences in life. My three decisions gave me a different path, I said, focus on, there is food, what a concept.

( Audience laughs )

Second, this is what changed my life, this is what shaped me as a human being. Somebodies gift, I don’t know who it is. I thought, my father always said, no one gives a shit, and someone I dont know, they are not asking just giving my family food, they are looking out for us, it made me believe this, was does this mean is that strangers care.

That made me decide that strangers care about me and my family and I care about them, what am I gonna do? I’m gonna do something to make a difference. So When I was seventeen I went out one day on Thanksgiving, and it was my target for years was to have enought money to feed two families. It was the most fun that I’ve ever did in my whole life. Most moving, then the next year, I did four, I didn’t tell anybody what I was doing, the next year eight, I wasn’t doing it for Brownie points, but after eight, shit I thought I could use some help.

Audience laughs

So sure enough, I went out and what did I do I got my friends involved and I grew companies eleven companies and I built a foundation, and now eighteen years later I’m proud to tell you that last year we feed two million people in thirty-five countries through our foundation. All through the holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas, in all the different countries around the world – fantastic.

Audience claps

Thank you

So I don’t tell you to brag, I tell you cause I’m proud of human beings because get excited to contribute once they have the chance to experience it to talk about it, and finally, Im about out of time. So the target that shapes you, here is what’s different about people, we have the same needs but, are you a certainty freak, is that what you value most or uncertainty? This man here couldn’t be a certainty freak if he climbed through those, those gaps ( gates? ) . Are you driven by significance of love? We all need all six, whatever your led system is, its tilts you in a different direction, and as you move in a direction you have have a destination, or destiny. The second piece is the map, think of that is the operating system tells you how to get there, some people’s map is that I’m gonna save lives even if I die for other people, and there are fireman and somebody else’s says I’m gonna kill people to do it. They are trying to met the same needs of significance. Right they want to honor god or they wanna honor their family with a different map, and they are seven different needs but I cant go through them cause I’m done cause the last piece is emotion. I say one of the parts of the map is like time, a long time is a hundred years, somebody else says its three seconds is what I have.

Audience laughs

And the last one that I have already mentioned to you, if you got a target and you got a map, lets say: “I can’t use Google cause I love maps ” , and they haven’t good for maps yet, so if you have to use maps, use map quest. How many of you have used this fatal mistake of using Map quest at some time? If you use this thing and you don’t get there, imagine if your believes guarantee that you never get to where you want to go.

Audience laughs

The last thing is emotion, now here is what I’ll tell you about emotion, there are six thousand emotions that we all have words for in the English language its just a linguistic representation, right, it changes by language. But if your dominant emotions, if I have more time, I have twenty-thousand people, of a thousand and I write down all the emotions that they experience in an average week, and I give them as long as they need, and on one side its empowering emotions and on the other side it’s dis empowering. Guess how many people experience – less than twelve.

And half of those make them feel like shit. So they got five of six fricken feelings, right, they feel happy happy, excited, oh shit, frustrated, frustrated, overwhelmed, depressed. How many know somebody that no matter what happens finds a way to get pissed off. How many people know someone like this? No matter what happens, no matter what happens they find a way to be happy or excited, how many people know somebody like this? Come on!

When 911 happened, I will finish with this, I was in Hawaii, I was with 2000 people in 45 countries and we were translating 4 languages simultaneously for a program I was conducting for a week, the night before was called emotional mastery, I got up and had no plan for this and said, we had all fireworks, I do crazy sh##t, fun stuff, and at the end I stopped and I had this plan, I was going to say, I never do what I was gonna say, all of a sudden, when do people really start to live? When they face death.

And then we got into this whole thing about, if you were gonna get off this island, if 9 days from now, you were gonna die, who would you call, what would you say, and what would you do? One woman and that night, 911 that happened. One woman had come to the seminar and when she came there she, her previous boyfriend had been kidnapped and murdered, her friend, new boyfriend wanted to marry her, and she said no, and if you leave and go to the Hawaii thing its over with, she said: ” It’s over ” To finish that, she called him and left him a message, true story at the top of the World Trade Centre where he worked. Saying I love you, I just want you to know that I want to marry you, it was stupid of me, she was asleep when he called her back from the top, oh honey I cant tell you what this means, he said I don’t know how to tell you this, you gave me the greatest gift cause I’m gonna die, and she played the recording for us in the room, she was on Larry King latter, and she said, you are probably wondering how on earth can this be happening to you twice. All I can say to you is, this must be God’s message to you, from now on, everyday give your all, love your all, don’t let anything every stop you. She finishes and a man stands up and says I’m from Pakistan and I’m Muslim and I’ve love to hold you hand, and say I’m sorry but frankly this is retribution. I can’t tell you the rest cause I’m out of time.

Audience sighs

Are you sure?

Person sitting in the chair on the stage says: ” Finish the story.”

Audience claps

Ten Seconds, Ten Seconds, I want to be respectful. Ten Seconds. All I can tell you, is that I brought this man on stage and with a man from New York who worked in the World Trade Centre cause I had about two hundred New Yorkers there, more than 50 lost their entire companies, their friends, marking off their palm piolets, one financial trader this woman made this steel balling, 30 friends crossing off that all died, and what I did to people, I said, what are we gonna focus on, what does this mean and what are we gonna do? And I took the group and I got people to focus on, if you didn’t lose somebody today, your focus will be how to serve somebody else. There are people, this women got up and she was so angry, screaming and yelling, she wasn’t from New York and she wasn’t an American, and she doesn’t know anybody here. I said you always get angry, she said, yes. Guilty people got guilty and sad people got sad. I took these two men and did an indirect negotiation. Jewish man family occupied territory, somewhere in the New York who would of died, if he was at work that day. And this man who wanted to be a terrorist, who made it clear. And the integration is on the film which I would be happy to send you, so you can actually see what happened, instead of my verbalization of it, but the two of them not only came together but changed their beliefs and motto’s of the world but they worked together to bring for almost 4 years now, to various Mosques and Synagogues the idea how to create peace and they wrote a book, which is called “My Giad” – My Way Of Peace. So transformation can happen, so my invitation to you is this.

Explore your web, the web in here, the needs, the beliefs, the emotions, that are controlling you, for two reasons so that there is more of you to give and achieve to, we all want to do that, but give cause thats what is gonna fill you up and secondly so you can appreciate to not just understand, cause that’s just intellectual, that’s the mind, but appreciate what’s driving other people, that’s the only way our world is gonna change.

God Bless You. I hope this is _______.
