In 1966 Lamborghini essentially invented this supercar with their 350 horsepower V12 mid engine rear wheel drive Miura. Sure there were Ferraris, Astons and Mercs before this, but it was the first real road going car and it changed everything.

Almost 50 years later the trapezoid inspired V12 Aventador that looks like nothing else on the road, yet again, seems to be a bit of an homage, an homage with twice the horsepower.

You get in the car you close that badass door. Then you flip up the missile command center, you push the ignition button, Houston you do not have a problem.

I got a manual, I turn off the parking brake, and I shift to first. This car just goes. Now it’s worth saying this is a single clutch gear box, so anything below about 40 miles an hour is painful.

The shifts are hard, they are abrupt, it seems like the car is trying to connect the whole time, but anything over above 45 miles an hour and this is the car you want.

Pretty much everything stays the same, the suspension which is extremely stiff, it just stays, it’s fixed, this is what it is. But you do get quicker shifts and a louder engine node, two things that I really, really like.

Essentially, this vehicle is a round radiator with an engine in the middle. Every place that there could be for a gap, a gape, or hole, a slit, a sliver, is there to suck in air. After having this only for two days, I was some kind of combination of the Ice Cream Man and Santa Claus, everywhere I went, boys and girls loved this thing. It’s evoked more excitement and awe from children than any other vehicle I’ve had.

And that’s exactly what it supposed to do, it’s supposed to inspire. Look no eight year old is putting a poster of a hybrid on their wall. And that’s why a V12 must exist in today’s auto culture. Lamborghini set the trend for supercars fifty years ago, and the Aventador is more than just another loud Italian machine. It’s an an homage to the past and sadly, may be the last of its kind.
