Researchers in MIT’s Robust Robotics Group and University of Washington’s Robotics and States Estimation Lab have teamed up to develop a Quadrotor system that enables autonomous flight and mapping in GPS denied environments using a connect carried by the vehicle. A real-time visual odometry developed at MIT runs on board of the vehicle providing locally accurate position and velocity estimates with which to stabilize the vehicle. The connect data is also sent off board, where the RGBD-SLAM algorithm developed at the University of Washington refines the position estimate and builds a 3D map of the environment. The refined position estimates are sent back to the vehicle to ensure a globally consistent state estimates while the maps enable fully autonomous path planning and exploration in 3D.
