Designed by the famed French designer Philippe Starck, the Yacht called “A” has quickly become the most loved and loathed boat in the sea. At 394-feet with a cost of more than $300 million, the ship is owned by Andrey Melnichenko, the 38-year old Russian billionaire. Its radical exterior, which looks more like a military ship or submarine is the subject of hot debate in yachting circles. But the interior has never before been viewed by the public, until now.
Mr. Starck loves mirrors, for what he calls their mathematical beauty. He’s filled the yacht with mirrors, Baccarat glass, crystal and other gleaming surfaces. One of the giant cabinets in the living room opens up to reveal a glass menagerie bar. The ship’s main stairwell is lined with scalloped, silver-leaf and has a hand carved banister that costs more than $60,000.
Security for the master bedroom is tight. The door is opened only by a finger print pad that’s accessible to four or five people. Like many of the electronic support, this 60-inch TV in the Master Suite is hidden in the ceiling and retracts via remote control. Many of the fixtures on the boat were custom-made and patented. These shower faucets were specially designed to fit the silver strip that runs throughout the yacht, their cost, more than $40,000 each.
The walls of “A” are covered in everything from mirrors to animal skins. This guest room is done entirely in White Stingray hides. Designer Philippe Starck is known for his risk “A” touches. For “A” he designed a special nookie room that’s hidden behind a wooden cabinet. At 394-feet long, “A” is the equivalent of a football field and a basketball court placed end-to-end. It took nearly 20 seconds to run the length of the boat’s hallway.
There are three pools on-board including a massage pool near the stern. It has his and her massage chairs, and a handy little drinks holder in the center. The bottom of the pool is glass, and can be viewed from below the boat’s entry hall, which also serves as a disco. The bow includes a giant helipad for when guests want to pop-in for a drink or the owner needs to dash back to his office in London.
Most Yachts have cramped garages that have just enough space to launch boats and jet skis. “A” however has a cavernous plush garage that houses its three designer launch boats. It can also be turned into a disco for parties. The rear door of the garage opens out to become a swim platform.
About the only thing that’s traditional about “A” is its wooden steering wheel. Most of the time however, the ship’s captain controls the boat with a single small joystick or a touch screen. If he wants to move the boat eight feet to the west he types in 8 foot west, and the computer tells the engines and thrusters what to do.
Forget the skipper’s chair, “A’s” furniture includes this Michel Haillard chair made from Alligator hides and Kudu horns. “A” has all the creature comforts including patches of grass for the owner’s dog, which has its own place to call home, when it’s out to sea.
For the Wall Street Journal, this is Robert Frank aboard “A” in Barbados.
