EVERY ARTIST IS ON A JOURNEY…

[Robert Hall “Bob” Weir (WEER; born October 16, 1947):]
As soon as I walk on the stage, I leave this world and I step into a dream world. I see the notes in color as flowing things, and I’m not there. The guy that you see standing in front of the microphone is the humble servant of the character in the song and the better I do it, the more transparent I am and the more of the song lives.

[Mickey Hart (born Michael Steven Hartman, September 11, 1943):]
When you’re onto your dream this music, you’re with it, it’s with you, and we dream a different dream slightly every night and that’s one of the most beautiful parts of playing this kind of music.

[William “Bill” Kreutzmann, Jr. (KROYTZ-mahn; born May 7, 1946):]
In this band you can do anything you think of, any idea that comes up, you’re welcome. It’s a place where – it’s olly olly oxen free. You can do anything you want.

This project for me has warped time and space completely. Music smooches everything down into a flat line where you can end up playing with the guys from the Dead and time and space just completely melts, you know. And so it’s – it’s really mind blowing.

[Grateful Dead Truckin':]
Lately it occurs to me what a long, strange trip it’s been.

[Bob Weir:]
Mickey and I were down in LA and we went by to see an old friend of both of ours, Don Was. We were just kicking stuff around and at some point he mentioned that he had heard that John who was a fan, so it occurred to me well hell I loved to meet him at some point, and so we did. John can play and he can sing. He understands the music and its roots, and so that seemed like a real plausible direction.

[Mickey Hart:]
There’s the songs and then there’s the inner language, and the nuances that really make it magic. And so John is picking up on this language, you know, like little codes and it feels like we’ve been playing together for a long time. It took us years to be able to learn these – the code. You’re picking up that right away.

[John Mayer:]
That’s what I said to myself when I screwed up. When I screw up I go: it took those guys years.

[Mickey Hart:]
Yeah.

[John Mayer:]
That’s what I said.

[Grateful Dead Truckin':]
What in the world ever became of sweet Jane?
She lost her sparkle, you know she isn’t the same.

[John Mayer:]
I’m starting to identify this playing as my own and then starting to turn it find this little chime of me in it, you know. And it’s been a really long process to be — find what I would call the truth.

[Mickey Hart:]
He’s worked that it, you know, and he really loves it. And so without passion, this is meaningless.

[Grateful Dead Truckin':]
Takes time, you pick a place to go, and just keep truckin’ on.

[Bob Weir:]
It’s a new outfit, a slightly new approach to the music because the personalities are different and that’s the wonderful thing about it. Every time it’s a little different, sometime it’s a way different.

I think to develop the freedom every night just move through it. I think as all the makings of a dream come true.

[Bill Kreutzmann:]
When we’re not playing we’re waiting to play, everything you’re doing is in your life you’re waiting to do this.

[Mickey Hart:]
It’s work in progress. We’ll sound different at the end of this tour.

[Bill Kreutzmann:]
Yeah.

[Mickey Hart:]
We’ll build on every night, you know, and the only expectations are that it feels good and it makes people happy, and you’re happy and the playing of it.

[John Mayer:]
For me I think the joy is going to be to take people back to that place that only these guys can take them, and I just want people to say ‘I closed my eyes in the middle of one song and the other, and I never thought that I’d feel that again and I felt it again’.

People know the music, they know the canon. So you can’t really sell them a second-rate GRATEFUL DEAD band. You know, they know what’s good and they know what’s not. And so, we’ll be trying our very best to make it new, every night, just like we used to.

[Grateful Dead Truckin':]
Busted, down on Bourbon Street, Set up, like a bowlin’ pin.
Knocked down, it get’s to wearin’ thin. They just won’t let you be, oh no.
