Being brave doesn’t mean you’re not afraid, it means you’re afraid and do it anyway. And when I look back so many times along the way, I felt afraid and I was just throw myself through the fear and then get on the other side and go, woo, I’m glad I did that.
In 2001, I was a child psychologist practicing in the Washington D.C. area and I stood in my family room holding my 1 year old daughter, watching the Twin Towers fall.
Once it was clear that the men and women who were serving were coming home with understandable mental health issues. It occurred to me, I would be willing to give a little bit of my time.
It sounds like we’re in pretty good shape obviously we have to be very loose and flexible.
Mental health professionals literally see people by the hour – we’ll just ask everyone to give an hour of their time to provide free mental health care to returning troops and their families.
When I started Give An Hour, I was a single mom, I didn’t know how to be a CEO, and I had to take care of my two girls. And when I look back if I’d been in my 20s or 30s, there is no way I would have been ready.
Together, we will change direction.
Our goal now is to encourage all Americans to pay attention to our mental wellbeing, just the same way we know about the signs of a heart attack.
Finding out that my daughters are proud of me has been amazing.
Building something that is having an impact, has been hugely rewarding.
Sometimes I feel like I am aging in reverse, I feel more alive, more energy and I can’t even see when I am going to slowdown step aside.
So I would say if somebody has an inkling, a desire, an itch, do it.
What we do the ripple effects that we can have on someone’s life and on our community and on our country and on our world, it is endless. There are endless possibilities if you just get outside of yourself a little bit, do a little bit more.
